Batam with Kids: Family Trip Ideas and Practical Tips

A short ferry, no time difference worth worrying about and plenty of space to run around. Batam works well with children if you plan the logistics.

At a glance

  • Children need their own passport with at least six months' validity from entry.
  • Each traveller, including children, completes the All Indonesia arrival declaration.
  • Mega Mall, connected to Batam Centre ferry terminal, has Timezone and an indoor playground.
  • Grand Batam Mall has the KidZilla indoor play zone and a Fun World arcade.
  • Montigo Resorts Nongsa offers baby-changing facilities and ferry transfers on request.

Batam is one of the easiest overseas trips you can take with children from Singapore or Johor: a short ferry, just a one-hour time difference, and a good mix of resorts, malls with play zones, theme parks and nature. The keys are to choose a base near your ferry terminal, keep travel days short and plan one big outing per day.

Before you go: paperwork for children

  • Passports for everyone. Each child needs their own passport, valid at least six months after the date of entry into Indonesia.
  • All Indonesia declaration. Every traveller completes the free arrival declaration, which you can file up to three days before arrival. Do the family's forms together the night before and screenshot each QR code.
  • Return tickets. Keep them handy; Indonesian immigration asks for a return or onward ticket.

See Batam entry requirements for full detail.

Choosing a family base

  • Batam Centre is the least stressful with small children. The ferry terminal links by bridge to Mega Mall, which has a department store, Timezone and an indoor playground, according to Tempo.
  • Nongsa suits families who want a pool and beach. Montigo Resorts Nongsa lists baby-changing facilities and arranges ferry transfers on request. Turi Beach Resort is about five minutes from Nongsapura terminal and offers water sports for older kids and teens.
  • Harbour Bay and Nagoya suit families with older children who enjoy malls and food.

Things to do with kids

Details below come from TheSmartLocal's family guide (last updated March 2024) and the venues mentioned. Prices and hours change, so check before you go.

Ocarina, Bengkong

A waterfront fun park with a Ferris wheel, flying chairs and bumper cars, plus food stalls and open space. Grab's attractions guide notes views of the Singapore skyline.

Grand Batam Mall, Lubuk Baja

Two indoor options for rainy or very hot afternoons: Fun World arcade and KidZilla, an indoor playground with slides and ball pits.

Panbil Nature Reserve

Children can feed rabbits, guinea pigs, fish and birds, see reptiles and walk through bird zones. Older kids may manage the optional forest hike.

The ILLusion Batam, Bengkong

28 rooms of 3D art, upside-down houses and perspective tricks: great for photos, and fully indoors.

Waterpark TOP 100, Batu Aji

Slides, a lazy river and a kids' playground. TheSmartLocal reported it closes on Tuesdays.

Miniature House Indonesia, Bengkong

Replicas of traditional Indonesian buildings, with free admission at the time of TheSmartLocal's report.

Ranoh Island

A short boat ride from Batam, with inflatable water play, snorkelling, canoeing and glamping. Usually booked as a package including transport and food.

Barelang bridges

A good outing for older children who enjoy a road trip. Break the drive with a beach stop and lunch. See the Barelang day-trip guide.

Free and low-cost ideas

  • Miniature House Indonesia in Bengkong had free admission at the time of TheSmartLocal's report.
  • Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya is free to enter and has koi ponds children enjoy.
  • Waterfront walks at Ocarina or Harbour Bay cost nothing but time.

Food with kids

  • Mall food courts offer variety and air-conditioning.
  • Seafood restaurants are fun for children, especially those over the water; ask for milder sauces.
  • Snacks such as luti gendang, bilis molen and kueh lapis travel well.
  • Halal: see our halal food guide if certification matters to your family.

Getting around with children

  • Ride-hailing (Grab, Gojek) is convenient in town. Child seats are not guaranteed, so bring a travel booster if you need one.
  • A car with driver suits days with several stops; ask your hotel to arrange one.
  • Ferry terminal pickups: apps cannot always collect inside terminals. At Batam Centre, Mega Mall is the easiest pickup point.

Ferry tips for families

  • Arrive early. BatamFast asks passengers to arrive at least 60 minutes before sailing; with children, aim for that at both ends.
  • Choose daytime sailings so little ones arrive fresh.
  • Pack a small bag with snacks, water, wipes and a change of clothes.
  • Remember the clock. Batam is one hour behind Singapore and Malaysia, and ferry times are shown in local time at each end.
  • Book ahead for school holidays, when ferries and family rooms fill up.

Matching activities to ages

  • Toddlers: indoor playgrounds at Mega Mall and Grand Batam Mall, the hotel pool, and short stops at Ocarina.
  • Primary-school kids: Panbil's animal feeding, The ILLusion, the waterpark and the Ferris wheel.
  • Teens: water sports at a Nongsa resort, the Barelang bridges, and the Galang refugee camp, a powerful history lesson.

What to pack for children

  • Passports, plus saved copies of bookings
  • Each child's All Indonesia QR code
  • Sun hats, swimwear and sunscreen
  • A light jacket for air-conditioned malls and ferries
  • Snacks and a refillable water bottle
  • A travel booster seat if you need one

Health and comfort

  • Heat: plan outdoor visits for early morning or late afternoon, and pack hats, sunscreen and water.
  • Insect repellent for parks and coastal areas.
  • Medicines: bring what your children usually need.
  • Travel insurance: check it covers Indonesia and any water activities.

A gentle two-day family plan

Day 1: morning ferry to Batam Centre, lunch at Mega Mall, indoor playground, early dinner, hotel pool.

Day 2: Ocarina or Panbil in the morning, The ILLusion after lunch, then snacks and the ferry home with plenty of buffer.

Coming home

If you return to Singapore within 48 hours, there is no duty-free liquor concession and GST relief is S$100 per traveller; check the Singapore Customs rules.

With the paperwork sorted and a base near your ferry, Batam is a short, easy first overseas holiday for the whole family.
