Where to Stay in Batam: Harbour Bay, Nagoya, Batam Centre or Nongsa

In Batam, where you sleep decides which ferry you take and how much time you spend in cars. Choose the area first, then the hotel.

At a glance

  • Harbour Bay ferry terminal sits about 10 minutes from Nagoya and has its own mall and Marriott hotel.
  • Batam Centre's ferry terminal connects by bridge to Mega Mall.
  • Nongsa resorts such as Turi Beach Resort are about five minutes from Nongsapura terminal.
  • One Batam Mall in Batam Centre is described as the largest shopping centre in the Riau Islands.
  • Sekupang, on the west coast, has its own ferry terminal and sea-view seafood spots.

Pick your area by what you want from the trip. Harbour Bay and Nagoya suit food, shopping and spa weekends. Batam Centre suits short stays and families who want the ferry on the doorstep. Nongsa suits a quiet resort break. Sekupang suits travellers heading to the west side. Then book your ferry to the matching terminal.

Harbour Bay: waterfront and walkable

Best for: couples and friends who want to walk to dinner; first-timers.

Harbour Bay is built around its own international ferry terminal on the downtown waterfront. The development includes BayFront Mall, a cinema, seafood dining and a Marriott hotel, and the terminal is about 10 minutes from Nagoya, according to Wikipedia's entry on the terminal. Horizon Fast Ferry sails here from HarbourFront, with crossings of about 45 minutes.

Why stay: you can step off the ferry and be at your hotel and the restaurant strip in minutes. It is the easiest base for a no-car weekend.

Consider: it is a city base, not a beach one.

Nagoya: the old downtown

Best for: shoppers, food hunters and budget-minded travellers.

Nagoya, in the Lubuk Baja district, is Batam's old commercial centre. Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall is the district's largest mall, and nearby you will find Grand Batam Mall (with family play zones), BCS Mall on Jalan Bunga Raya and Nagoya Citywalk. Food stalls, coffee shops and local favourites cluster here.

Why stay: lots of choice at every price, and plenty to do after dark.

Consider: traffic can be heavy, and you will want Harbour Bay or Batam Centre terminal for the ferry.

Batam Centre: ferry on the doorstep

Best for: one-night trips, families with luggage, and anyone who hates transfers.

Batam Centre is the civic heart of the island and its busiest ferry gateway, with sailings from both HarbourFront and Tanah Merah. The terminal links by bridge to Mega Mall, which has a department store, Timezone and an indoor playground. One Batam Mall on Jalan Engku Putri, described as the largest shopping centre in the Riau Islands, is a few minutes away, and the city's grand mosque stands in the government precinct.

Why stay: shortest door-to-ferry time on the island; easy for Sunday departures.

Consider: it feels more like a modern town centre than a holiday spot.

Nongsa: resorts and sea views

Best for: couples, families and groups wanting pools, beaches and golf-and-spa weekends.

Nongsa is the north-east district, home to the airport and several resorts. Resorts here are close to Nongsapura ferry terminal, served by BatamFast from Tanah Merah.

  • Turi Beach Resort says it is about 5 minutes' drive from Nongsapura terminal, 15 minutes from Batam Centre, 20 from Nagoya, 25 from Harbour Bay and 10 from the airport. It has beachfront rooms, several restaurants and water sports through its Cabana Club, according to the resort's site.
  • Montigo Resorts Nongsa is a couple of miles from Nongsapura terminal and arranges ferry transfers on request; it offers baby-changing facilities, says the resort.

Why stay: it is the closest thing to a beach holiday within an hour of Singapore.

Consider: you will rely on resort transfers, taxis or apps for trips into the city.

Sekupang and the west coast

Best for: travellers with business on the west side, or seafood with a Singapore view.

Sekupang has its own ferry terminal served from HarbourFront. In nearby Tiban, Kelong Baba in the Green Bay complex is a seafood restaurant known for its views towards Singapore, according to BatamFast.

Why stay: quieter than Nagoya, with a direct ferry from HarbourFront.

Consider: fewer hotels and attractions than the city centre.

Bengkong: where locals eat

Best for: food-focused trips and repeat visitors.

Bengkong is home to long-running seafood spot Golden Prawn 933, the red-and-gold Cheng Ho Mosque in the Golden City area, and family attractions such as Ocarina and The ILLusion. Most visitors eat here rather than stay, but it is worth knowing.

Staying near the airport

Hang Nadim International Airport is in Batu Besar, in the Nongsa district. If you are flying in from Kuala Lumpur, a Nongsa resort keeps your transfer short: Turi Beach Resort puts the airport about 10 minutes away.

From ferry to hotel

  • Harbour Bay: the Marriott is part of the Harbour Bay development, and Nagoya's hotels are about 10 minutes away.
  • Batam Centre: walk across the bridge to Mega Mall and pick up a car there.
  • Nongsa: pre-book your resort transfer from Nongsapura.
  • Nagoya: a short taxi or app ride from Harbour Bay.

Who should stay where

  • Couples: Harbour Bay for dinners and spas, or Nongsa for a pool-and-sunset escape.
  • Friends' trips: Nagoya, for food and malls within easy reach.
  • Families with young children: Batam Centre for the short walk from the ferry and Mega Mall's indoor playground, or a Nongsa resort.
  • Business travellers: Batam Centre or Nagoya, depending on where your meetings are.

Quick matchmaker

  1. First trip, no car: Harbour Bay
  2. Shopping and food: Nagoya
  3. One night, early ferry home: Batam Centre
  4. Pool and beach: Nongsa
  5. West-side plans: Sekupang

Booking tips

  • Match your ferry to your area. Crossing the island adds time and cost.
  • Ask about transfers. Nongsa resorts often arrange them; confirm in writing.
  • Check what the price includes. Many hotels in Indonesia add tax and a service charge to the room rate.
  • Weekends fill up. Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest for Singapore and Malaysia visitors.
  • Families: look for connecting rooms, pools and proximity to a mall with indoor play for rainy afternoons.
