Batam for Singaporeans: The Complete Weekend Guide

Batam sits about 20km off Singapore's south coast, an hour behind on the clock and under an hour away by fast ferry. Here is how to turn that short hop into a properly good weekend.

At a glance

  • Batam is about 20km off Singapore's south coast and runs on UTC+7, one hour behind Singapore.
  • Ferries leave from HarbourFront and Tanah Merah; crossings take roughly 40 to 70 minutes depending on route.
  • Singapore citizens can visit Indonesia visa-free for short stays; your passport needs at least six months' validity from the date of entry.
  • Complete the free All Indonesia arrival declaration within three days before you land (as of October 2026).
  • Back in Singapore after under 48 hours away, there is no duty-free liquor concession and GST relief is capped at S$100.

Batam is the easiest overseas weekend a Singaporean can take. The island sits about 20km off Singapore's south coast, fast ferries cross in well under an hour and a half, and you arrive somewhere that genuinely feels different: Malay and Indonesian food, sea-facing seafood kelongs, bridges strung across a chain of islands, and spa-and-mall city life at rupiah prices.

This guide gives you the whole weekend in one place. Each section links to a deeper BatamGems guide when you want the detail.

The short answer

  • Getting there: fast ferry from HarbourFront or Tanah Merah. Pick your Singapore terminal by where you live and your Batam terminal by where you are staying.
  • Entry: Singapore citizens are visa-free for short visits. You need a passport valid at least six months from your date of entry, and you should complete the free All Indonesia arrival declaration within three days before arrival.
  • Money: everything is priced and paid in rupiah. Carry some cash, and check whether your bank app can scan Indonesia's QRIS codes.
  • Getting around: Grab and Gojek both operate in Batam. For a full day out to the Barelang bridges, a car with driver makes life easy.
  • Coming home: if you have been away less than 48 hours, there is no duty-free liquor concession and GST relief drops to S$100.

Pick your terminals first

Batam has several ferry terminals and they are not close together, so choosing the right pair saves you time on both sides.

From Singapore, sailings to Batam leave from HarbourFront and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. According to the Singapore Cruise Centre schedule, HarbourFront serves Batam Centre, Sekupang and Harbour Bay, while Tanah Merah serves Batam Centre, Sekupang and Nongsapura. If you live in the east, Tanah Merah is usually the easier start; in the west or south, HarbourFront.

Note that HarbourFront operations have moved into the new HarbourFront Ferry Terminal at 5 HarbourFront Avenue, about 70 metres from the old building. BatamFast moved first on 7 July 2026 and the other Indonesian operators followed from 15 July 2026, reported Mothership. Use HarbourFront MRT Exit B.

On the Batam side:

  • Harbour Bay puts you on the waterfront in the old downtown, close to Nagoya.
  • Batam Centre is linked by bridge to Mega Mall and is the island's busiest gateway.
  • Nongsapura is the quiet north-east coast, closest to the resorts.
  • Sekupang is on the west side.

Before you go: the paperwork

Three things to sort out before Friday:

  1. Passport validity. Indonesia asks for at least six months' validity after your date of entry, as Sindo Ferry's visa page spells out. ICA also advises Singaporeans to check their passport is valid for at least six months before any trip.
  2. The All Indonesia declaration. Since 2025, arrivals at Batam's international port fill in one free online form that covers immigration, customs and health. You can submit it up to three days before arrival via allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or the app, then show the QR code on arrival.
  3. Your ferry tickets. Weekends and school holidays fill up, and some sailings only run on certain days. Book ahead and keep a screenshot of your booking.

A two-day plan that works

Day one: arrive, eat, unwind

Take a morning ferry so you land before lunch. Batam is one hour behind Singapore (UTC+7), so a 9.30am sailing feels like an early start in Batam time.

Spend the afternoon in the city. Nagoya, the old downtown, is where you find malls such as Nagoya Hill alongside hawker-style food. Batam Centre has Mega Mall right at the ferry terminal and One Batam Mall nearby. If you want a massage, ask your hotel to recommend a reputable spa rather than following street touts.

For dinner, go for seafood. Batam's kelong-style restaurants set over the water are a weekend tradition: think chilli crab, butter prawns and steamed fish. Our what to eat in Batam guide names places and dishes, including gonggong, the Riau Islands' signature sea snail.

Day two: bridges and islands

Hire a car with a driver for the morning and head south across the Barelang bridges, the chain of six bridges linking Batam to Rempang and Galang. The full run is about 50km. Stop for photos at the first bridge, then continue to the former Vietnamese refugee camp on Galang, a moving piece of regional history. See our Barelang day-trip guide.

Head back for a late lunch, pick up kueh lapis or snacks, and allow plenty of time for your return ferry.

Money, phones and apps

  • Rupiah only. Indonesian law requires transactions in Indonesia to be in rupiah, so prices will be in IDR.
  • QR payments. Since November 2023, customers of participating Singapore banks (OCBC and UOB at launch, with DBS joining later) can scan Indonesia's QRIS codes with their banking apps, according to MAS. Check that your app supports it before relying on it.
  • Money changers. If you change cash in Batam, use a licensed changer showing Bank Indonesia's "KUPVA Berizin" logo.
  • Roaming. Singtel's ReadyRoam Neighbours packs cover Indonesia; other telcos and eSIM providers have their own options, so compare before you leave.

Where to stay for one or two nights

  • Harbour Bay or Nagoya if you want to walk to dinner, malls and spas.
  • Batam Centre if you want the shortest walk from ferry to bed.
  • Nongsa if the plan is a pool, a beach and not much else. Resorts such as Turi Beach Resort sit a few minutes' drive from Nongsapura terminal.

Coming home: what to know at Singapore customs

Singapore Customs grants the duty-free liquor concession only if you have spent at least 48 hours outside Singapore. A typical one-night Batam trip does not qualify. GST import relief is up to S$500 if you were away 48 hours or more, but only up to S$100 if under 48 hours. There is no duty-free concession or GST relief at all on cigarettes and tobacco. Declare anything above the limits; the rules are on the Singapore Customs website.

Weekend tips from the planning desk

  • Leave buffer on the return. BatamFast asks passengers to arrive at least 60 minutes before sailing at the new HarbourFront terminal. Do the same on the Batam side, especially on Sunday evenings.
  • Watch the clock. Ferry timetables usually show local time at each end. Batam departures are in Indonesian time.
  • Travelling as a family? Our Batam with kids guide covers water parks, play zones and pacing.
  • Muslim travellers: see the halal food guide for certification logos and mosques.

Batam rewards a little planning. Get the terminals and paperwork right, and the rest of the weekend is seafood, sea views and an easy ride home.
