At a glance
- A wall sign is not proof: scan the QR code on Indonesia's halal label or search info.halal.go.id.
- "No pork, no lard" is the restaurant's own claim and says nothing about cooking wine.
- Ask: "Ada sertifikat halal?", "Pakai babi atau minyak babi?", "Masakannya pakai arak atau angciu?"
- Kopak Jaya 007 lists last orders at 7pm on weekdays and 8pm on weekends and public holidays.
- Live seafood is often priced by weight: agree the price per kilo and the weight before cooking.
Batam has plenty of seafood and plenty of Muslim visitors from Singapore and Malaysia. What it does not have, in our records, is a seafood restaurant we can show you as halal-certified. So the useful skill is checking for yourself. These tips take a minute each and work at any restaurant on the island. For the full list of places with their status and a map, see halal seafood in Batam.
1. Ask for the certificate, not the sign
A green "halal" sign on a wall is not proof. A real certificate carries Indonesia's halal label and a certificate number. Scan the QR code on the label, or search the restaurant's name on the government register at info.halal.go.id. Our halal food guide shows what the labels look like.
2. "No pork, no lard" is the restaurant's own word
Some seafood restaurants say they use no pork or lard. In our list, the food guide Eatbook reports this for Golden Prawn 933, Barelang Seafood Restaurant and Ikan Bakar Cianjur. That is a useful start, but it is not a certificate, and it says nothing about sauces or cooking wine.
3. Three questions to ask, in Bahasa Indonesia
Staff at tourist restaurants often speak some English, but these short questions get a clear answer:
- "Ada sertifikat halal?" Do you have a halal certificate?
- "Pakai babi atau minyak babi?" Do you use pork or pork fat?
- "Masakannya pakai arak atau angciu?" Is the food cooked with alcohol or Chinese cooking wine?
If the answer is unsure, choose plain dishes: grilled fish (ikan bakar) or steamed fish, and ask for the sambal on the side.
4. Look at the drinks menu
A restaurant can be "no pork" and still serve alcohol. Our records say SeeSea Seafood at Harbour Bay serves beer and cocktails, and a review mentions beer at Setia Budi Seafood in Nongsa. If that matters to you, ask before you sit down.
5. Seafood is priced by weight, so agree the price first
At many seafood restaurants you choose from live tanks and pay by weight. Barelang Seafood Restaurant sells seafood by weight and Golden Prawn 933 prices at market rates. Before it goes to the kitchen, ask:
- the price per kilo,
- the weight of what you picked,
- and the cooking style and its price.
Take a photo of the scale or the written order. It saves an argument at the end.
6. Kelongs on the Barelang road close early
The over-the-water kelongs are a lunch trip. Kopak Jaya 007 lists last orders at 7pm on weekdays and 8pm on weekends and public holidays. Kelong Restaurant Citra Utama 188 lists 9am to 7pm. For a later dinner, Golden Prawn 933 lists daily 9:30am to 11pm and Harbour Bay Seafood 11am to 10pm.
7. Book at weekends, but only where you can
Most seafood places take walk-ins. At weekends the popular ones fill up. Kopak Jaya 007's own site says tables for up to 10 can be booked by phone or in person. On a BatamGems place page, a WhatsApp or Call button appears only when we have the restaurant's number. No button means walk in.
8. Bring rupiah in cash
Smaller seafood spots may not take cards. One review says Setia Budi Seafood is cash only. Read our money guide for ATMs and QR payments.
9. Plan the ride back
The Barelang kelongs and Nongsa beaches are far from the city. Every place page has a Get there box: Directions opens your map app, and Grab or Gojek copies the address for you to paste. Check your ferry times before a long lunch.

Questions people ask
How do I ask if a restaurant is halal in Bahasa Indonesia?+
Ask "Ada sertifikat halal?" (Do you have a halal certificate?). Follow with "Pakai babi atau minyak babi?" (pork or pork fat?) and "Masakannya pakai arak atau angciu?" (alcohol or Chinese cooking wine?).
Is "no pork, no lard" the same as halal?+
No. It is the restaurant's own description. A halal certificate carries Indonesia's halal label and a number you can check on info.halal.go.id.
What time do the Barelang kelong restaurants close?+
Earlier than city restaurants. Kopak Jaya 007 lists last orders at 7pm on weekdays and 8pm on weekends; Kelong Restaurant Citra Utama 188 lists 9am to 7pm. Plan them as a lunch stop.
