Why go
From 1979 to 1996 this camp on Galang Island sheltered roughly 250,000 refugees. Today visitors walk among a cemetery, an unfinished church, a museum of camp artefacts and a replica of a refugee boat, all managed by the Batam Authority.

Things to know
It is about 60 km from the city via the Barelang Bridge with no public transport, so hire a car and driver. Check that the site is open before setting out, as officials have discussed other uses for parts of the camp.
