Malaysia to Batam: Ferries from Johor and Flights from KL

From Johor you can sail straight to Batam; from KL and soon Penang you can fly. Here are the options that actually operate, checked October 2026.

At a glance

  • Ferries sail from Stulang Laut (Johor Bahru) to Batam Centre, run by several operators.
  • Putri Anggreni ferries link Puteri Harbour (Iskandar Puteri) with Harbour Bay.
  • AirAsia has flown daily Kuala Lumpur–Batam since 13 March 2026; Batik Air also flies KL–Batam.
  • Batik Air plans Penang–Batam flights three times weekly from 18 October 2026.
  • Malaysians are visa-free for short visits; passports need six months' validity from entry.

Malaysians have three realistic ways to reach Batam: a ferry from Johor Bahru's Stulang Laut terminal to Batam Centre, a ferry from Puteri Harbour to Harbour Bay, or a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hang Nadim International Airport. From October 2026, Penang gets a direct flight too.

Option 1: Stulang Laut (Johor Bahru) to Batam Centre

The Johor Bahru Ferry Terminal, also called Stulang Laut, is at Jalan Ibrahim Sultan, about 5km from JB city centre. It serves Batam Centre as well as Bintan and Karimun.

Who sails

A January 2025 schedule listing from Jokka2Traveller shows four operators on the Batam Centre route: Pintas Fast Ferry, Dolphin Fast Ferry, Citra Ferry and Indomas Ferry, with departures spread from early morning to early evening. Ticket counters are on the second floor of the Berjaya Waterfront complex, where you can compare operators.

How long it takes

Expect roughly two hours on the water. Malaysian travel site MyTrip.my puts the crossing at about 1 hour 45 minutes and advises arriving at least 90 minutes before departure for immigration.

Why choose it

You land at Batam Centre, the island's main ferry gateway, connected by bridge to Mega Mall. It is the simplest option if you live in JB.

Option 2: Puteri Harbour to Harbour Bay

Puteri Harbour International Ferry Terminal is in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Ferry Global Group runs Putri Anggreni ferries between Puteri Harbour and Harbour Bay, on Batam's downtown waterfront. Its online timetable for 7 October 2026 shows several departures from Harbour Bay, with scheduled times of roughly 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours between departure and arrival clock times. Remember that Batam is one hour behind Malaysia, so part of that gap is the time-zone change.

Harbour Bay puts you close to Nagoya's malls, food and hotels. Check the Ferry Global Group schedule for current sailings from the Malaysian side.

Option 3: Fly from Kuala Lumpur

Batam's Hang Nadim International Airport is in Batu Besar, in the Nongsa district.

Flying makes most sense from the Klang Valley, where the drive to Johor alone would take longer than the flight.

Coming soon: Penang to Batam

Batik Air plans to launch Penang–Batam flights from 18 October 2026, three times weekly, according to Media Selangor. Check the airline's site for confirmed schedules before you plan around it.

Option 4: via Singapore

Some Malaysians cross into Singapore and take a fast ferry from HarbourFront or Tanah Merah. It can work if you are already in Singapore, but it adds a second border crossing each way. Non-residents entering Singapore must submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days before arrival; see ICA's page. Our Singapore to Batam ferry guide covers the routes.

Entry rules for Malaysians

  • No visa for short visits. Malaysians are visa-free for short visits to Indonesia, as ferry operator Sindo Ferry notes. Indonesian immigration's visa-free visit allows up to 30 days, which cannot be extended, for tourism, social, cultural or family visits.
  • Passport validity. At least six months after your date of entry.
  • Return or onward ticket. Indonesian immigration lists this as a requirement for visa-free entry.
  • All Indonesia declaration. Complete the free online arrival declaration up to three days before arrival at the official All Indonesia portal or app.

Full detail is in our Batam entry requirements guide. Rules change; check the official pages before you travel.

Money: pay with DuitNow-linked apps

Malaysia and Indonesia linked their national QR systems in 2022. Users of participating Malaysian apps can scan QRIS codes at Indonesian merchants, according to Bank Negara Malaysia. Check whether your bank or e-wallet supports it before you go. Carry some rupiah for small vendors and taxis. More in our money in Batam guide.

Halal food

Not every restaurant in Batam is halal-certified, and many places that avoid pork and lard are not certified either. Look for Indonesia's official halal label and read our halal food in Batam guide for what to look for.

Which option suits you?

  • Living in JB or southern Johor: Stulang Laut to Batam Centre is the simplest. You are on the ferry within a short drive of the city.
  • Living in Iskandar Puteri: Puteri Harbour to Harbour Bay lands you right by Nagoya's malls and hotels.
  • Living in the Klang Valley: fly. A direct flight beats a long drive south plus a two-hour ferry.
  • Living in the north: watch for Batik Air's Penang service from 18 October 2026.
  • Already in Singapore for work or family: the Singapore ferries are frequent, but remember the extra immigration stops.

When you arrive

At Batam's ferry terminals and at Hang Nadim airport, have your passport and All Indonesia QR code ready; the code is scanned at immigration and customs. Indonesian customs allows personal goods bought abroad up to US$500 FOB per person without duty.

From the airport, Grab, GoCar and Maxim all operate, with app pickups at Parking Area A since August 2024. From Batam Centre ferry terminal, walk to Mega Mall for app pickups. More in our getting around Batam guide.

Practical tips

  • Mind the clock. Batam runs on UTC+7, one hour behind Malaysia. Ferry timetables show local time at each end.
  • Arrive early for the ferry; immigration and ticketing take time on busy days.
  • Weekends and Malaysian school holidays are busier. Book ahead.
  • Choose your terminal by your hotel. Batam Centre suits malls and the government-district hotels; Harbour Bay suits Nagoya and the waterfront.
  • Confirm schedules the day before. Ferry operators can change timings and routes, and some services are seasonal.

Batam is closer to Johor than many Malaysians realise. Pick the right terminal and the trip is a short, easy hop.
