Is Batam Safe? What Governments Say, for Singaporeans

What official advice says about Batam, what it says about Indonesia as a whole, and the specific risks worth planning for.

By SingRankUpdated 6 November 2026 7 min read

At a glance

  • Canada and Australia advise a high degree of caution for Indonesia overall; their higher levels cover parts of Papua (read 6 Nov 2026).
  • In March 2026 Indonesia's national police reported allegations of extortion involving certain immigration officers in Batam. We found no published outcome.
  • Turi Beach and Nongsa Point warn of fake WhatsApp numbers and fraudulent bank details.
  • The Singapore Consulate-General is on +62 778 372 0000, or +62 811 7049 084 for urgent help after hours.

Is Batam safe? No government page we read tells travellers to avoid Batam, and none names it as a danger area. Canada and Australia advise a high degree of caution for Indonesia as a whole. The risks to plan for are specific: 2026 allegations about immigration officers at Batam Centre, card fraud, fake booking numbers and unsafe drinks.

Is Batam safe for Singaporeans?

We cannot give you an official "yes", because none of the government pages we read gives one. This guide shows what they do say, separates what names Batam from what covers all of Indonesia, and tells you what we would do.

Our view: nothing we read gives a reason to cancel an ordinary weekend of Batam hotels, places to eat and Batam malls. Take the precautions below, and treat the immigration allegations seriously.

What governments actually say

GovernmentLevel for IndonesiaDoes it name Batam?
Canada"Exercise a high degree of caution". Avoid non-essential travel to most of Indonesian PapuaNo
Australia"Exercise a high degree of caution". Reconsider travel to Papua Pegunungan and Papua TengahNo. It mentions the Riau Islands for forest fires
United KingdomNo numbered level. Says terrorist attacks are likely to be attempted in IndonesiaNo

We read these pages on 6 November 2026. We could not open the US State Department page, so we say nothing about its level. The Singapore Consulate-General's site showed no Batam travel notice when we checked, which does not prove there is none. Check it again before you go.

Two lines need care. Canada's piracy warning is about ships in the Strait of Malacca and Riau province, which is a different province from the Riau Islands. The UK's is also about ships. Neither names Batam or passenger ferries.

The allegations about immigration at Batam Centre

This is the Batam-specific issue to know about. In March 2026, Indonesia's national police reported allegations of extortion involving certain immigration officers in Batam. Citing local media, it said several foreign tourists, particularly Singaporeans, reported this when entering through Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal. The Riau Islands police said they had received the information and would first coordinate with immigration.

These are allegations. We found no official page giving the outcome, and no finding against any officer. We also found nothing official saying the matter has been closed.

What we would do, as our own advice and not an official procedure:

  1. Know your position. MFA says Singapore passport holders can stay up to 30 days visa-free as tourists, so there is no visa to buy.
  2. Have your passport, arrival card and return ticket ready.
  3. If asked for money, stay calm. Ask what the payment is for, and ask for an official receipt.
  4. If you feel unsafe, call the Consulate-General (numbers below).
  5. Report it afterwards. Indonesia's immigration website sends complaints to the government's Lapor! service.

Crime, cards and money changers

The official warnings cover Indonesia generally, not Batam. We found no official crime figures for Batam.

  • Street crime: the UK warns of pickpockets and bag-snatchers, above all where tourists gather.
  • Cards: the same page says credit card fraud is common. Keep your card in view whenever you pay.
  • Money changers: the UK says to stick to licensed exchanges, which display a QR code and the Bank of Indonesia logo. Our money guide has the rest.
  • Violent crime: Canada says armed robberies occur regularly, and its named example is the Banda Aceh to Medan road. It also says foreigners travelling alone or at night are at particular risk.

Fake WhatsApp numbers and fake sites

This one has a Batam source. Turi Beach warns that an unauthorised WhatsApp number was added to its Google business profile, and that any other bank account details are fraudulent. Nongsa Point Marina says messages from any other WhatsApp number are unauthorised, and that any other bank account details are fraudulent.

Before you pay a deposit, open the resort's own website and compare the number. Turi's official WhatsApp is +62 821-7056-5363 and Nongsa Point's is +62 811-7761-323, as published on those notices.

Australia also warns of fake websites for the All Indonesia arrival card. Start from the immigration department's site instead of a search ad. If you are unsure, ScamShield's helpline is 1799 in Singapore.

Is Batam safe at night?

We found nothing official about Batam at night, either way. The closest text is Canada's general warning about solo and night-time travel.

The drinks advice is clear, though it covers Indonesia generally. The UK reports deaths and serious illness from alcoholic drinks containing methanol, which you cannot identify by taste or smell. It also says to watch your drinks being prepared and not to leave them unattended. Its drink-spiking reports name Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, and Australia says drinks may be spiked.

Are the ferries and small boats safe?

No government page we read assesses the Singapore to Batam ferries. The general warnings are about Indonesian boats overall. The UK says sea conditions can change rapidly and safety standards vary between providers, and tells you to check for life jackets and lifeboats. Canada says ferry accidents are common, often from poor safety practices or extreme weather.

Apply that advice most strictly to small local boats. Our islands guide and water sports guide cover what to ask.

Could a tsunami or earthquake reach Batam?

We found no official statement on Batam's own risk, so we will not call it low or high. National warnings apply: the UK says earthquakes happen regularly and suggests BMKG's warning app. It also says a tsunami could arrive within minutes of a major quake close to shore, so follow local authorities.

Australia mentions forest fires in the Riau Islands during the dry season, usually April to November. If you have asthma, check air quality first.

Drugs, medicine and vapes

Do not carry anything you are unsure of. The UK says Indonesia has a zero-tolerance policy, with long prison sentences or the death penalty possible. Australia tells travellers to check that their medicine is legal in Indonesia.

Coming home, HSA says vaporisers are prohibited in Singapore, and individuals can be fined up to S$10,000. Buying one in Batam does not change that.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to go to Batam now from Singapore?+

None of the Canadian, Australian or UK pages we read on 6 November 2026 names Batam as an area to avoid. Canada and Australia advise a high degree of caution across Indonesia. Check the Consulate-General's site before you leave, and know about the March 2026 immigration allegations at Batam Centre.

Is Batam safe for solo female travellers?+

We found no official page on this for Batam. Canada's general advice says foreigners travelling alone or at night are at particular risk, and the UK says to watch your drinks being prepared. Book a known hotel, use a booked ride after dark, and save the 112 and Consulate-General numbers.

What should I do if an officer asks me for money at Batam Centre?+

Stay calm, ask what the payment is for, and ask for an official receipt. MFA says Singapore passport holders can stay up to 30 days visa-free as tourists. If you feel unsafe, call the Consulate-General on +62 778 372 0000, or +62 811 7049 084 after hours. This is our advice, not an official procedure.
