Batam on a Budget: Ferries, Rooms, Food and Fun for Less

Batam is cheap once you land. The trick is controlling the three big costs: the ferry, the room and the rides. Every price here comes from a dated source.

By the BatamGems editorsUpdated 7 October 2026 7 min read

At a glance

  • BatamFast and Majestic Fast Ferry publish an economy return fare of SGD 76, including fees and surcharge.
  • Sindo Ferry's SGD 28 one-way fare excludes the SGD 10 Singapore departure fee, the Batam terminal fee and the fuel surcharge from 12 March 2026.
  • The lowest Booking.com listings in Batam started at about US$7 a night when checked on 6 October 2026.
  • A Trans Batam bus ride costs IDR 5,000 on any route, according to a local report.
  • Back in Singapore after under 48 hours away, there is no duty-free liquor concession and GST relief is capped at S$100.

Batam can be a very cheap trip, but only if you control three costs: the ferry, the room and how you move around. Food and entry fees are small by comparison. Every price below comes from a dated source and is quoted in the currency that source used. Prices change often, so treat them as planning estimates, not quotes.

The short answer

A cheap day trip is a return ferry ticket, meals at warungs or hawker-style stalls, buses or shared rides, and one or two low-cost sights. A cheap weekend adds a night or two in a guesthouse or budget hotel. The ferry is usually your biggest single cost.

Ferry savings

Compare the all-in price, not the headline fare

Sindo Ferry's published economy fare is SGD 28 one-way or SGD 56 return, surcharge included (Sindo Ferry). It looks cheapest, but it does not include the Singapore passenger departure fee (SGD 10 per person), the Batam terminal fee (Rp100,000 or SGD 10 per person) or the temporary fuel surcharge in effect from 12 March 2026. Add those before you compare.

BatamFast's published economy fare is SGD 43 from Singapore and SGD 40 from Batam. It already includes the ticket, the surcharge and the SGD 10 departure fee at each terminal (BatamFast). Majestic Fast Ferry's regular fare is the same, SGD 43 and SGD 40, and includes the Singapore departure fee, the Batam terminal fee and the surcharge (Majestic Fast Ferry).

Horizon Fast Ferry, which sails HarbourFront to Harbour Bay, was quoted at SGD 43 one-way and SGD 76 return in an Instarem guide dated 3 February 2026 (Instarem). Horizon has since announced a fuel surcharge from 12 March 2026, so today's fare may be higher.

Buy a return

BatamFast and Majestic both publish an economy return of SGD 76. Two single tickets on the same operators cost SGD 43 plus SGD 40, or SGD 83. On those published fares, the return saves SGD 7 per person.

More ways to keep the crossing cheap

  • Check promos. Majestic lists promo fares separately from its regular fare, so look before you book.
  • Match the terminal to your bed. Harbour Bay is about 10 minutes from Nagoya, and Batam Centre links by bridge to Mega Mall (where to stay in Batam). Landing near your room saves a taxi.
  • Skip the cabin unless you are a big group. BatamFast's VIP room is SGD 180 per cabin per way, for about 9 to 10 people, not per person (Tripcetera).

Where to stay on a budget

On 6 October 2026, the lowest Booking.com listings in Batam were Capital O Backpacker Guesthouse at US$7.12, RedDoorz Plus Batu Aji at US$12.06, Botania Homestay at US$13.48 and Como Homestay at US$16.81 a night. Booking.com put the average for cheap Batam Centre hotels at US$35 a night (Booking.com).

One step up, the same check found Ayola Signature Ocarina from US$24.42 (Booking.com), OS Style Hotel Batu Aji from US$30.80 (Booking.com) and Harmoni One Convention Hotel from US$31.06 (Booking.com). Each figure is the lowest nightly rate for two adults on the day we checked. Hotel rates change daily.

Three budget rules:

  1. Check the map, not just the price. A cheap room far from your terminal can cost more once you add taxis.
  2. Nagoya suits budget travellers. It has rooms at every price, food stalls and malls close together. Batam Centre puts the ferry on your doorstep.
  3. Read what the rate includes. Many hotels in Indonesia add tax and a service charge to the room rate.

Eating cheaply

Local food is where Batam saves you the most. A meal at a warung or inexpensive local restaurant costs about IDR 26,864 to 50,000 per person, while a fast-food combo is about IDR 57,800 to 75,000 (Numbeo). Hawker-style dishes such as nasi lemak or mie tarempa run about SGD 5 to 10 each (Traveloka).

Cheap local dishes to look for:

  • Mie tarempa: thick yellow noodles in a reddish spice paste with skipjack tuna.
  • Mie lendir: noodles, bean sprouts and egg under a thick peanut and sweet potato sauce.
  • Sop ikan: clear fish soup with rice and green chillies.
  • Luti gendang: oval fried bread filled with seasoned tuna.
  • Nasi lemak, Batam style: coconut and pandan rice with anchovy chilli, egg and peanuts.

These come from Indonesia Travel. In Nagoya, the Nagoya Hill Food Street food court puts many stalls under one roof; halal status varies by stall.

Coffee can be cheap or not. A café cappuccino or latte ranges from about IDR 10,745 to 52,000 (Numbeo, Horizon Fast Ferry).

For one treat, a seafood dinner such as ikan bakar for two runs about SGD 15 to 35 (Traveloka). Seafood is often priced by weight, so confirm the price and weight before it is cooked.

Read 25K as IDR 25,000 on menus, and expect Batam's 10% tax on restaurant food and drink (DDTC). More ideas on our street food page.

Getting around cheaply

  • Trans Batam bus: IDR 5,000 on any route (Seniberjalan). The network has nine corridors. At Batam Centre, the nearest stops are by Mega Mall.
  • Grab and Gojek: both operate in Batam. Gojek's GoRide motorbikes suit solo travellers without luggage. We have not verified app fares by route, so we do not quote them.
  • Gojek code at the terminals: code GOBATAMFAST gives up to IDR 20,000 off GoCar rides at Batam ferry terminals, valid to 31 July 2027 (BatamFast blog).
  • Know the pickup rule: ride-hailing cars may not pick up inside the Batam Centre ferry terminal zone. Walk to Mega Mall.
  • Taxis: from Batam Centre terminal to Nagoya, a negotiated flat fare of about IDR 80,000 to 120,000 was reported. Flag-fall runs about IDR 7,000 to 20,000 and about IDR 4,000 to 15,000 per km (Seniberjalan, Numbeo). Agree the price before you get in.
  • Car with driver for a group: from SGD 70 per day for 10 hours (Horizon Fast Ferry). Shared between friends, it is a sensible way to see the Barelang bridges.

Full detail is in our getting around guide.

Free and low-cost things to do

Some of Batam's best moments cost little beyond the ride there:

  • Beaches: Nongsa, Elyora and Tanjung Pinggir charge about IDR 10,000 entry (detik.com, November 2024).
  • Mega Wisata New Ocarina theme park: IDR 10,000 to 25,000 entry, same source.
  • Waterpark Top 100 Batu Aji: IDR 25,000 on weekdays and IDR 30,000 at weekends (Horizon Fast Ferry).
  • Nature parks: Seaforest Adventure and Panbil Nature Reserve charge IDR 35,000 to 50,000, same source.
  • The Barelang bridges: the chain of six bridges south of the city. A photo stop at the first bridge needs only transport. See our Barelang day trip.
  • Temples and mosques: the red-and-gold Cheng Ho Mosque in Bengkong, the grand mosque in Batam Centre and Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, which has a vegetarian canteen.
  • Mall walks: Nagoya Hill, Mega Mall and One Batam Mall are air-conditioned and free to browse.

If you want one splurge, budget for it. Jet ski rides run IDR 250,000 to 350,000 and parasailing IDR 350,000 to 460,000 (Traveloka).

Money tips

  • Pay in rupiah. Indonesian law requires transactions in Indonesia to be in rupiah (Hukumonline).
  • Try QRIS. Customers of participating Singapore banks can scan Indonesia's QRIS codes; OCBC and UOB joined at launch, with DBS to follow (MAS). Malaysians can use the DuitNow and QRIS link (Bank Negara Malaysia). Check the rate shown before you confirm.
  • Use licensed changers only. Look for Bank Indonesia's KUPVA Berizin logo with a QR code. Bank Indonesia warns that illegal changers often offer rates that look too good (Antara). Count your notes at the counter.
  • Choose rupiah on card terminals. If a terminal offers your home currency, picking rupiah usually lets your own bank set the rate.
  • Tipping is optional. It is not required in Batam but is appreciated, says Horizon Fast Ferry.

Singapore customs on short trips

Most budget trips are short, and that matters on the way home. Singapore Customs grants the duty-free liquor concession only after at least 48 hours outside Singapore. GST relief is up to S$100 if you were away under 48 hours, and up to S$500 if longer. There is no concession at all on cigarettes and tobacco (Singapore Customs). Declare anything above the limits.

Plan your trip

Put the pieces together on our trip planner: pick a ferry, a room from hotels and a few stops from street food. Then check prices on the day you book.
