How Long Does Batam Layer Cake Last? What the Bakeries Say

No preservatives, and no day count from the bakers. Treat kueh lapis as a fresh cake: let it cool, carry it open, then into the fridge.

At a glance

  • Lamoist and Sun Li both say their layer cakes contain no preservatives, and neither publishes a day count (checked 4 Nov 2026).
  • Sun Li strongly recommends putting layer cake in the fridge as soon as possible.
  • Lamoist says a hot cake that is not cooled naturally can be damaged in 2 to 3 days.
  • Kek Pisang Villa banana cake keeps 3 to 5 days at room temperature, or up to 7 days in the fridge.

How long does Batam layer cake last? The bakers do not say. Lamoist and Sun Li both state their cakes have no preservatives, and neither gives a day count. So treat it as a fresh cake: buy it on your last day, let it cool before closing the box, then refrigerate it.

Everything below comes from the bakeries' own pages, checked on 4 November 2026.

The short answer

  • No day count: Lamoist and Sun Li do not say how many days their layer cake keeps.
  • No preservatives: both bakeries say so on their own websites.
  • Fridge: Sun Li strongly recommends the fridge as soon as you get the cake.
  • The biggest risk: a box closed while the cake is still hot. Lamoist says that can damage the cake in 2 to 3 days.
  • Banana cake is different: its seller prints 3 to 5 days at room temperature, or up to 7 days in the fridge.

If you see a day count for Batam layer cake elsewhere, it did not come from these two bakers. So we do not give one.

The hot-box mistake

At the weekend you may be handed a cake that is still warm. Lamoist's FAQ explains what goes wrong next. If a hot cake is not cooled naturally, water forms inside the box, goes back into the cake, and damages it "in 2-3 days time". Lamoist prints handling instructions on its boxes, and its staff always remind buyers to let the cake cool.

Lamoist warns that a cake sent a long way in a plastic container has a 50/50 chance of going mouldy.

Banana cake: the one with a day count

OlehOlehBatam, the shop Kek Pisang Villa's web address redirects to, prints storage times. Its Kek Pisang Original keeps 3 to 5 days at room temperature, or up to 7 days in the fridge, stored somewhere cool and dry. The blueberry version keeps 2 to 4 days at room temperature, or up to 7 days in the fridge. You can buy it at Kek Pisang Villa Botania.

How to carry it home

  1. Buy on your last day. All four main ferry terminals for Singapore have a layer-cake counter, such as Lapisa at Harbour Bay. Our guide to layer cake at the ferry terminal lists each one with its hours.
  2. Warm cake? Leave the box open until it has cooled. Do not seal it in a plastic bag.
  3. Keep it out of the sun on the way to the ferry.
  4. Fridge at home. That is what Sun Li asks for.
  5. Check it on arrival. If a delivered Sun Li cake has a problem, the bakery asks you to report it within 24 hours, with photos and an unboxing video.

Staying more than a day, or buying for a party? Both bakeries deliver to Singapore pick-up points, so the cake can travel without you. And remember that all your processed food together must stay within the 5 kg limit. Singapore's food agency also suggests choosing non-perishable items, such as biscuits, traditional snacks and other heat-processed food (SFA general rule). Our guide to bringing food from Batam to Singapore has the full rules, and the Batam oleh-oleh guide lists more gifts.

Questions people ask

Does Batam layer cake need to be refrigerated?+

Sun Li says yes: because its cakes have no preservatives, it strongly recommends the fridge as soon as you receive them. Lamoist also says it uses no preservatives. Neither bakery publishes how many days the cake keeps.

Why did my Batam layer cake go mouldy?+

Lamoist's FAQ names the usual cause: a cake boxed while hot. If it is not cooled naturally, water forms inside the box and damages the cake in 2 to 3 days. Lamoist also says cakes in plastic containers have a 50/50 chance of going mouldy.
