Batam Day Trip from Singapore: Ferries, Timed Plans and Customs Rules

Fast ferries leave Singapore before 8am and the last boats home leave Batam after 8pm. Here is how to choose your terminals and fill a single day well.

By the BatamGems editorsUpdated 7 October 2026 7 min read

At a glance

  • Batam runs on UTC+7, one hour behind Singapore.
  • The first HarbourFront to Batam Centre sailing leaves at 07:40 (BatamFast); the last return from Batam Centre leaves at 20:35 Batam time (Majestic), per timetables checked in October 2026.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your date of entry into Indonesia.
  • The All Indonesia arrival declaration is free and can be filed up to three days before arrival.
  • Back in Singapore after under 48 hours away: no duty-free liquor, GST relief up to S$100, and no tobacco concession.

A Batam day trip is very doable from Singapore. Fast ferries cross in roughly 40 to 70 minutes. The first sailings leave before 8am, and the last boats home leave Batam after 8pm. That gives you around 12 hours on the island. This guide shows how to use them well.

Who a day trip suits

A day trip works best when you want one clear thing from Batam:

  • A food run: noodles for breakfast, seafood for dinner, layer cakes to take home.
  • A mall and spa day: shopping and a massage close to the ferry.
  • A photo day: the Barelang bridges with a car and driver.

It suits couples, friends and solo travellers who pack light. It suits families with small children less well, as the early start and late return make a long day. If you want a resort, a pool and a slow pace, stay a night instead. Our Batam weekend guide for Singaporeans covers that.

Pick terminals for the longest day

On a day trip, the pair of terminals matters more than the operator. You want the earliest sailing out and the latest sailing back, ideally from the same Batam terminal.

Watch the clock. Batam is one hour behind Singapore (UTC+7). Singapore departures are listed in Singapore time. Batam departures are listed in Batam time.

First and last sailings, read from each operator's timetable in October 2026:

RouteFirst out (Singapore time)Last back (Batam time)
HarbourFront and Batam Centre07:40 BatamFast20:35 Majestic, 20:30 BatamFast
HarbourFront and Harbour Bay08:15 Horizon20:30 Horizon
Tanah Merah and Nongsapura08:00 BatamFast20:00 BatamFast
Tanah Merah and Batam Centre08:15 Majestic18:00 Majestic (19:50 Fridays and weekends)

What this means in practice:

  • HarbourFront and Batam Centre gives the longest day. The 07:40 lands at roughly 7.20 to 7.50am Batam time.
  • HarbourFront and Harbour Bay is the best pair for Nagoya and seafood. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, so the 08:15 lands at about 8am Batam time.
  • Tanah Merah and Batam Centre is thinner in the evening. Check the return before you commit.
  • Nongsapura is on the quiet north-east coast, far from Nagoya and the bridges. It suits a resort day, not a city day.

Some sailings run on certain days only, and operators can change times without notice. Check the day before you travel. Our Singapore to Batam ferry guide and the ferry hub list every route.

Fares: BatamFast and Majestic publish an economy return of SGD 76, including surcharge and terminal fees. Sindo's SGD 56 return excludes the Singapore departure fee, the Batam terminal fee and the fuel surcharge in effect from 12 March 2026. Check the price when you book.

Paperwork: sort it the night before

  1. Passport. It must be valid for at least six months after your date of entry into Indonesia, as Sindo Ferry notes. Check the expiry date now.
  2. All Indonesia declaration. This free online form covers immigration, customs and health. Submit it within the three days before you arrive, on allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or the official app. Screenshot the QR code. Ignore any site that charges a fee.
  3. Return ticket. Indonesian immigration lists a return or onward ticket as a requirement for visa-free entry. Book your return sailing in advance and keep the booking on your phone.

Singapore citizens are visa-free for short visits. If you live in Singapore on another passport, check your own nationality's rules. Singapore PRs holding a passport eligible for Visa on Arrival may enter Batam for up to four days with their physical blue IC, according to Sindo Ferry. Details are in our Batam entry requirements guide.

Three day plans with realistic timing

Times are Batam time unless marked. Allow time for immigration when you land. On the way home, arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes before sailing, as BatamFast asks.

Plan 1: Harbour Bay seafood and Nagoya

Best for food lovers. Ferry pair: HarbourFront and Harbour Bay.

  • 8.15am Singapore time: Horizon sailing from HarbourFront. Land at about 8am.
  • 9am: Breakfast in Nagoya, about 10 minutes away. Mie tarempa or nasi lemak are good choices.
  • 10.30am: Walk the Nagoya malls. Nagoya Hill is the largest in the district.
  • 1pm: Lunch of sop ikan or bak kut teh in Lubuk Baja.
  • 3pm: Snack run. Pick up kueh lapis or bilis molen to take home.
  • 5pm: Back to Harbour Bay, where BayFront Mall and seafood restaurants sit at the terminal.
  • 5.30pm: Early seafood dinner. Start with gonggong, then share chilli crab or butter prawns.
  • 7.15pm: Horizon sailing home, or the 8.30pm for a slower meal.

Plan 2: Batam Centre malls and a spa

Best for an easy day with little travel. Ferry pair: HarbourFront and Batam Centre.

  • 7.40am Singapore time: BatamFast from HarbourFront. Land at around 7.30am.
  • 8.30am: Walk across the bridge into Mega Mall for breakfast.
  • 10am: Ride to One Batam Mall, which BatamFast describes as the largest shopping centre in the Riau Islands, or visit the grand mosque.
  • 1pm: Lunch, then a massage. Ask for a reputable spa and agree the treatment and price first. Avoid street touts.
  • 5pm: Back to Mega Mall for dinner. BatamFast notes pre-immigration on the mall's second floor.
  • 7pm: Check in for an evening sailing. The last returns to HarbourFront were 8.20pm (Sindo), 8.30pm (BatamFast) and 8.35pm (Majestic).

Plan 3: Barelang bridges by car with driver

Best for photographers and history lovers. Ferry pair: HarbourFront and Batam Centre.

  • 7.40am Singapore time: BatamFast to Batam Centre. Meet your driver at Mega Mall.
  • 8.30am: Head south. The first bridge, Tengku Fisabilillah, is about 35km from the city. Stop for photos while the light is soft.
  • 10am: Drive the rest of the chain. The six bridges span about 50km, roughly 50 minutes of driving without stops.
  • 11am: The former Vietnamese refugee camp on Galang, in use from 1979 to 1996. Allow time for the museum, boats and cemetery.
  • 1.30pm: Seafood lunch. Kopak Jaya 007 Kelong Seafood in Tembesi overlooks the Barelang bridge.
  • 3.30pm: Drive back north.
  • 6pm: Dinner near the terminal, then an 8pm-or-later sailing.

The bridges alone take about three to four hours return from the city. Adding Galang fills most of the day, so this plan has little slack. Do not book an early-evening ferry. Agree the hours, route, fuel and tolls with your driver before you set off. Horizon Fast Ferry advertises a car with driver from SGD 70 for 10 hours. More in our Barelang day-trip guide.

Money for one day

  • Rupiah only. Indonesian law requires transactions in rupiah. Menus often write 25K for IDR 25,000.
  • QRIS. Customers of participating Singapore banks can scan Indonesia's QRIS codes with their banking apps, according to MAS. OCBC and UOB joined at launch, with DBS to follow. Check that overseas QR payment is switched on before you leave.
  • Some cash. Carry small notes for taxis, stalls and parking. Change money only at licensed changers showing the KUPVA Berizin logo.
  • Bills. Restaurants may add Batam's 10% food and drink tax, and sometimes a service charge. Seafood is often priced by weight, so confirm the weight before it is cooked.

More in money in Batam.

Getting around

Grab and Gojek both run in Batam. Set up the apps and payment at home, and make sure you have data on arrival. At Batam Centre, a local report in April 2026 said ride-hailing cars could not pick up inside the terminal zone. Walk to Mega Mall for pickup instead.

Taxis wait outside the terminals, and fares are often negotiated. That same report put Batam Centre to Nagoya at about IDR 80,000 to 120,000. Agree the price before you get in. For Barelang, book a car with driver. See getting around Batam.

Coming home: Singapore customs

A day trip is well under 48 hours, so the short-trip rules apply:

  • No duty-free liquor concession. It needs at least 48 hours outside Singapore.
  • GST relief up to S$100 on goods you bring back.
  • No concession at all on cigarettes and tobacco.

Declare anything above the limits. The rules are on the Singapore Customs website. Keep the S$100 limit in mind when you shop.

Day-trip checklist

  1. Passport valid at least six months beyond your date of entry
  2. All Indonesia declaration submitted, QR code saved
  3. Return ferry booked, confirmation on your phone
  4. Bank app set up for QRIS, plus some small rupiah notes
  5. Grab or Gojek installed, with data for Indonesia
  6. Driver booked if you are doing Barelang
  7. Return sailing noted in Batam time, with 60 minutes' buffer
  8. The S$100 GST relief limit in mind
